What is Candidate Sourcing?

Candidate sourcing is the proactive identification and engagement of potential candidates who have not applied to your role. It covers Boolean search on professional networks, talent-pool re-engagement, referrals and outbound outreach, and it feeds the top of the hiring funnel alongside inbound applications.

Sourcing and inbound applications solve different problems. Sourcing reaches passive candidates who are not looking, which matters for scarce senior and specialist roles. Inbound flow dominates for high-volume and generalist roles, where the constraint is not finding people but evaluating the many who already applied.

Diagnose the actual bottleneck before investing. If you receive 300 applications per role and interview 12, sourcing more candidates will not help — the constraint is screening throughput, which is solved by interviewing every applicant rather than by adding more of them.
