What is Hiring Funnel?

The hiring funnel describes the narrowing progression of candidates from awareness of a role through application, screening, interview, offer and acceptance. Measuring conversion between adjacent stages isolates exactly which step is losing candidates and why.

The screening step is usually the sharpest constriction. When only a fraction of applicants can be interviewed, funnel conversion is capped by recruiter hours rather than candidate quality, so the funnel measures your capacity, not the market.

Interviewing every qualified applicant changes what the numbers mean: conversion from application to shortlist becomes a genuine measure of applicant quality and job-description fit, which makes the metric actionable.
