What is Knockout Questions?

Knockout questions are pass/fail questions asked during the application that filter out candidates who fail a hard requirement — work authorization, licensure, shift availability, location or certification. They remove ineligible applicants before any evaluation effort is spent on them.

Also known as: pre-qualifying questions, screening questions

Good knockout questions test genuinely binary requirements. Anything involving degree — years of experience, skill level, seniority — belongs in the scored interview, not in a hard filter, because rigid thresholds discard strong non-traditional candidates for no gain.

Because knockouts are exact-match rules rather than model inferences, they run before scoring and are fully explainable, which matters if a rejection is ever challenged.
